Although best remembered for his devotion to the core Austro-Germanic repertoire, Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan did flirt with the English repertoire in the ’50s and early ’60s. There are EMI recordings of him leading the Philharmonia in Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Britten’s Variations on a Theme by Frank Bridge and rehearsal recordings of him leading the Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI di Roma in Walton’s First Symphony. His last affair was this 1961 performance of Holst’s The Planets with the Vienna Philharmonic. Recorded in bone-crushing — but still deep and colorful — sound by John Culshaw, Karajan’s view of The Planets, like his view of Vaughan Williams and Britten, is decidedly superficial. This is not to say that his conducting is anything less than superb. Karajan was one of great technical virtuosos and he misses nothing in Holst’s monumental score — not the balances, not the details, not the colors, not the rhythms, nothing. But everything inside Holst’s score is more or less missing: “Mars” has power but lacks point, “Venus” has beauty but lacks soul, “Mercury” has speed but lacks strength, “Jupiter” has weight but lacks humor, “Saturn” has mass but lacks fear, “Uranus” has muscle but lacks wit, and “Neptune” has carefully calculated gradations of dynamics but altogether lacks any sense of blissful departure into infinite space. Despite the superlative but distinctly unidiomatic playing by the VPO, Karajan’s 1961 Planets — like his 1981 Planets for Deutsche Grammophon with equally unidiomatic playing by the Berlin Philharmonic — is fit only for listeners who prefer their English music deracinated.The same cannot be said of Karajan and the VPO’s 1960 recording of Strauss’ Don Juan that concludes the disc. Tomita: The Planets

This was the most controversial Tomita album, where he uses Holst’s spectacular, mystical suite The Planets as a launching pad for what amounts to a simulated spaceship trip through the solar system. Hence the title The Tomita Planets, which did not deter the Holst estate from trying (unsuccessfully) to pull this recording off the market at the time. When Tomita sticks to what Holst wrote, he follows every turn and bend of the score, save for a big cut in the last part of Jupiter and an eviscerated Uranus that nearly disappears altogether. Moreover, the music — especially Venus — often does lend itself to an electronic space flight fantasy, with Tomita’s arsenal of phase-shifting, flanging, pitch-bending, envelope following and reversing choral effects and more on full display. It’s the stuff between movements that provoked the purists — the campy simulated mission control communications and electronic blastoff prior to Mars and the “noises” of space flight scattered throughout (including a nasty asteroid belt between Jupiter and Saturn). The most questionable idea was that of playing Jupiter’s grand central theme on a tinkly electronic music box as a way to open and close the record — which some will find satirical, others touching, still others tasteless. Indeed, Tomita seems to have it in for British pomp; when this theme is played within the context of Jupiter, he interrupts it with electronic chatter between mission control and the spaceship. Ultimately, The Tomita Planets is still good electronic fun, and it launched a series of space-themed concept albums by this electronic astronaut. ~ Richard S. Much of Robert Pollard’s recorded output of 2008 suggested the man was going to slow down and focus on quality control rather than cranking out as much product as possible, which seemed to be his modus operandi during the first few years of his post-Guided by Voices career. But The Planets Are Blasted, the second album from his group Boston Spaceships, has emerged a mere six months after their debut, Brown Submarine, so it seems the man is back in prolific mode. But Pollard also has a pair of worthwhile collaborators in John Moen (of the Decemberists) and Chris Slusarenko (of Sprinkler and the Takeovers), and though Boston Spaceships’ sonic identity clearly comes from Pollard’s songwriting, The Planets Are Blasted is every bit as satisfying as the band’s debut, and at its best this hits the same giddy melodic heights as GBV’s golden era but with a grander sense of scale and drama. Songs like “Queen of Stormy Weather” and “Canned Food Demons” could pass for classic-era GBV in dim light, but most of these tunes carry more muscle and heft than Pollard’s usual miniature pop constructs, and Moen and Slusarenko (along with a handful of guests, including ex-GBV guitarist Greg Demos and fellow Decemberist Chris Funk) give this music the aural grandeur of the ’70s arena rock and prog rock Pollard clearly loves without its crippling pretension or pomposity. “UFO Love Letters” and “Keep Me Down” nearly beat the Who at their own game, and “Headache Revolution” offers a vague notion of what King Crimson might have been like if they were any fun. And The Planets Are Blasted is that rare Pollard project that leaves you wanting more — the 14 songs here each sound complete and fully realized, and at under 35 minutes, this set doesn’t run out of ideas before it draws to a close. (Pollard sings up a storm, too.) Adem’s heralded Homesongs was a paean to hearth and homestead, and it succeeded in spades by turning the intensely personal into the universal: home as harbor in an anthropological sense, the glue that binds everyone together at the same time it affords us our most intimate moments. On Love and Other Planets, Adem turns the telescope on its end, equating the far reaches of our universe with the space that exists in the closest of quarters — between lovers, between friends, between our own perceptions and reality. It’s another intriguing angle from which to launch a concept record, though Adem’s intimate, stand-alone portraits certainly belie any prog-ish stereotypes — The Wall this ain’t. But Adem does make more liberal use of the cut-and-paste studio aesthetic that defined the post-rock experiments of Fridge (where he played bass), adding more textural dimensions to Love and Other Planets without sacrificing the organic acoustics of Homesongs. It’s a more balanced hybrid where the electronic and acoustic meld with seamless beauty, wheezing harmoniums bleeding into textured synths, autoharps, glockenspiel, and clarion-toned acoustic guitars thrown into relief by processed samples. Percussive elements that were Fridge’s bread and butter are also more central characters here. Songs like “Launch Yourself” and “You and Moon” swirl and crackle with synth washes and handclap percussion sculpted into rich backbeats. “These Lights Are Meaningful” and “Something’s Going to Come” feature drums up front in the mix, adding an uptempo rock feel — albeit acoustic-based — to Adem’s folkish inclinations. A pair of lonely laments conjuring the vastness of space, “Crashlander” is a “Space Oddity”-like tale rendered in gentle Radiohead ballad style and “Last Transmission from the Lost Mission” is accented with disembodied chimes and melodica floating past like icy space debris. But any suggestions of existential isolation are disarmed by the sonic warmth of the songs and production, and by the genuine humanism in Adem’s lyrics. Disc opener “Warning Call,” with its luscious fingerpicked patterns and ringing glock, is a plea for environmental sensitivity on a personal and global scale. The solo guitar piece “Spirals” finds Adem’s ruminative and rickety voice — think Richard Hawley in a higher register without the reverb — contrasting the universe outside with our own inner worlds, where emotions result in “tectonic shifts” of the heart every bit as profound as the stars’ splendor. With Love and Other Planets, Adem has made a fitting companion for Homesongs, a record cut from similar thematic cloth but painted with an expanded musical palette.
